Why Big Bear?

 

Four Seasons of Paradise with an elevation of over 6700 feet, clear clean air, crystal blue skies, tall pines and over 3000 acres of majestic sparkling blue water make Big Bear truly a sight to behold at any season throughout the year.

Located only 2 hours from downtown Los Angeles/Orange County and 2.5 hours from SanDiego, Big Bear is the sixth sunniest place in the United States, averaging approximately 300+ days of sunshine a year.

Big Bear is famous for its ski resorts and fishing but it offers so much more throughout the year. Big Bear Lake offers fishing, sailing, kayaking, boating, jet skiing/seadoos, parasailing, swimming and lake tours. There is also horseback riding, fantastic hiking trails (i.e. portions of the Pacific Crest Trail), backpacking, camping, jeeping, off-road motorcycling, mountain biking, bicycling and golfing. Don’t forget miniature golf , bowling at the Bowling Barn, performing arts theatre, shopping or taking in a good movie at one of our two movie theatres located in “TheVillage”.

We also have the Moonridge Zoo, a 2.5 acre facility for animals wounded in the wilderness, a Solar Observatory along with our Discovery Center where guests visit for naturalist-led interpretive programs, evening nature lectures, hiking and camping information. Don’t forget the Big Bear Valley Historical Museum with exhibits that begin with the Indian period and incude log cabins from the 1800’s, gold mining artifacts, cattle ranching, lumbering, blacksmithing and many other historical artifacts.

For the air enthusiasts, our airport is open 365 days a year and is the only airport serving the mountain top communities.

Bear Valley Unified School District takes great pride in educating our community. For instance the Class of 2000 had an average of 55.4% for competed coursework required for entrance into the University of California and California State University Systems (California average 34.8%). We have three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one continuation school.

Bear Valley Community Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and offers 24-hour emergency care, continuum of care and community education.

The Valley has Senior Housing located one block from “The Village” along with easy transportation via MARTA which services Big Bear Valley to Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, San Bernardino and Victor Valley area, as well as a weekend TROLLEY for easy travel around the valley.

Big Bear averages 6 to 7 million visitors, while supporting a permanent population of over 20,000 residents. An estimated 25,000 vacation properties ranging from small quaint cabins to exclusive executive/lakefront and ranch homes.
